What is permaculture?
Permaculture is often defined as sustainable ecological design and self maintaining agriculture based on the patterns that occur in the natural world.
Permaculture ideas follow the principle that everything is inter related. Natural systems do not have a lot of waste.
For example, leaves fall on the ground each fall adding natural organic matter to improve the soil which helps the plants achieve healthy growth the following year. |

 Morning January 21st = Very cold &
Very beautiful.
I went for a walk this morning and took a couple winter morning pictures. Lovely light and shadows everywhere. The trees are bare but so beautiful.
I went for my walk hoping to hear and or see the pileated woodpecker. I heard one calling several times but no luck on seeing one today, maybe next time! The pileated is one of the biggest woodpeckers of the woods. Check them out:

DRY! REALLY REALLY DRY. That is the story so far for 2012. Remember to water your plants, especially your newly planted trees and shrubs. We have had half the normal amount of rain since early May.

Last Saturday, the winter sun was shining brightly! I took some photos of Lincoln Marsh in Wheaton. Also of note, there were a lot of Eastern Bluebirds there last weekend! It was beautiful to see them with their bright colored feathers.

We had a great time on this last Sunday morning helping out at the Wolf
Road Prairie doing some Buckthorn cleanup! If you have never been there
it is a great place to see wonderful native species. It is 80 acres near
31st and Wolf Road.
The Cleanup also made the paper...check it out at

Hey Everyone! Happy New Year! I had a little time to check out The Field Museum exhibit 'Restoring Earth' it was great to see and I highly recommend visiting it if you have time!
I thought this was a fabulous quote from the exhibit: "Stewardship takes courage and sacrifice - sometimes for centuries.
Amazonia's people show us how it can be done."
